The test nobody tells you about

Does your garage door pass the federal safety test?

Your your garage door answers to Washington β€” specifically, to a rule written in 1992. Since January 1, 1993, every residential opener sold in the U.S. must reverse automatically on contact with an obstruction β€” entrapment protection required by UL 325 and 16 CFR Part 1211, standards written after documented child entrapment deaths.

Verify it in under a minute: interrupt the sensor beam mid-close (it should reverse), then the lumber test on the floor (contact must reverse it). Failing either puts the door outside a federal standard written after documented tragedies β€” and a local pro can bring it current, often the same day.

Field guide

Straight answers, no upsell

Q.Is GarageDoorCallHQ a garage door company?

No. We're a free referral service that connects you with independent, local garage-door professionals. We don't do repairs ourselves, we don't dispatch trucks, and we don't sell parts β€” we get your call to the right local pro quickly.

Q.What does it cost to call?

Nothing to get connected. We never charge homeowners, and we'll never advertise a bait fee. Any pricing is between you and the pro you choose β€” after they've actually seen your door.

Q.Can I really fix some of this myself?

Often, yes β€” and we'll tell you when. Misaligned photo-eyes, a remote that needs re-pairing, dry rollers: genuine free fixes. A broken spring or an off-track door is a job for a pro with the right tools. We're honest about the difference.

Q.Why shouldn't I replace a torsion spring myself?

Torsion springs are wound under extreme tension and send thousands of people to emergency rooms every year, per CPSC injury data. A slip can break bones. This is the one repair the pros genuinely exist for.

Q.Do you serve my area?

We connect calls across 39 states and thousands of cities. The fastest way to find out is to call (888) 830-7442 β€” if there's a pro in your area, we'll route you to them.
